Role of hippocalcin in mediating Aβ toxicity

► The calcium sensor hippocalcin is deregulated in Alzheimer's disease hippocampus. ► In APP mutant mice, hippocalcin levels are increased. ► In these mice, hippocampal neurons that are high in Abeta are low in hippocalcin. ► Hippocampal neurons from hippocalcin KO mice are sensitive to calcium deregulators. ► Cortical neurons from hippocalcin KO mice show sensitivity similar to wild-type. ► Hippocalcin knock-out neurons show an age-dependent mitochondrial deregulation.
