The current view of elderly people is mainly negative, tinted with ageism (in other words, all forms of discrimination, segregation or contempt based on the age). This view of old age is not insignificant. In this article, we will review the manifestations of ageism in our daily lives, its origins, its implications for our attitudes, as well as the consequences for the elderly. We will also discuss some clinical and ethical issues related to these ageist attitudes.
