Epidural fibrosis or arachnoiditis has, for several decades, been considered the principal culprit to the point of resulting in repeated, yet inefficient, surgical procedures. Contemporary opinion is of the view that fibrosis is more a superficial observation than the cause of root pains. The features of these types of residual pains are revealed in naturopathic pain. Once recognised, these conditions call for appropriate therapeutic solutions (tricyclic anti-depressants, anti-epileptics, transepidermal neurostimulation) rather than prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatories or steroids. The prevention of root pains is done via a surgical procedure free from haemorrhage by recourse of less invasive methods and a better control of pre- and postoperative pain.
