Fentanyl intranasal : données cliniques dans le traitement des accès douloureux paroxystiques (ADP) en cancérologie

The high liposolubility of fentanyl enables its use as an immediate delivery product via several administration means for cancer-related pain. The intranasal method has been tested pharmacocinetically and clinically and several studies demonstrate the rapid action for this type of pain, as early as the 10th minute. Comparatively to the placebo or to the transmucous method, the intranasal method enables significantly faster pain relief associated with greater tolerance. The ease of use means that its use can be envisaged for many breakthrough pains (BTP) for quick acme, as long as strict titration is given. Interviewing and collecting past information on the patient are crucial to obtain a specific picture of their BDP. Intranasal fentanyl is indicated in BDP treatment for adults already receiving opiate baseline treatment. The contra-indications are identical to opiates in general. Informing patients and family members is necessary for these new administration means to ensure better respect of administration conditions.
