Stoma care is often described as pain-free, but there could be two exceptions: the immediate postoperative period and when complications develop. Such pain is generally considered inevitable, and often ignored or minimized, and thus poorly managed. There are however several simple means for relieving stoma pain. Proper management of stoma pain requires better knowledge of local techniques to prevent the development of complications, particularly skin complications, and to optimize care and limit pain perception.
