Biais d’amplification dans les citations : l’exemple d’une revue systématique de la littérature sur l’efficacité de la thérapie comportementale et cognitive des symptômes psychotiques

RésuméObjectifLe biais d’amplification dans le processus de citation d’un article consiste à exagérer les résultats d’une étude publiée. Cette étude cherche à identifier la présence d’un biais d’amplification dans la citation d’une revue systématique de la littérature sur l’efficacité de la thérapie comportementale et cognitive des symptômes psychotiques. En effet, si le biais d’amplification est bien connu dans le monde de l’industrie, il est peu étudié dans le domaine des psychothérapies.MéthodeLa recherche des articles citant une méta-analyse a été effectuée sur ISI Web of Knowledge© entre avril 2005 et février 2012. Les citations ont été retranscrites et évaluées de façon indépendante par trois juges en fonction d’une grille de cotation développée pour l’occasion.RésultatsLa recherche a conduit à l’identification de 90 articles, 81 en anglais, cinq en allemand, deux en français, un en italien et un en espagnol. Les accords de fidélités inter-juges entre les trois juges qui ont coté les articles concèdent des kappas supérieurs à 0,81. Un biais d’amplification est observable pour 11 % des articles.DiscussionLe biais d’amplification obtenu dans cette étude reste faible et confirme les résultats d’une étude récente. Il est vrai que le champ de la thérapie cognitive et comportementale des symptômes psychotiques est à l’abri de conflits d’intérêt commerciaux. Toutefois, il n’est pas protégé des biais d’allégeance au modèle thérapeutique. La revue par des pairs semble avoir un effet protecteur sur ce biais de citation dans le cadre du domaine étudié.

ObjectiveThe amplification bias in the process of citing an article consists of exaggerating the results of a published study. This study seeks to identify the presence of amplification bias in the citation of a systematic review of the literature on the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy of psychotic symptoms. Indeed, if the amplification bias is well known in the world of industry. There is little study in the field of psychotherapy.MethodThe search of articles citing a meta-analysis was performed on ISI Web of Knowledge© from April 2005 to February 2012. The citations were transcribed and evaluated independently by three judges based on a rating scale developed for the occasion.ResultsThe research led to the identification of 90 citations, 81 in English, five in German, two in French, one in Italian and one in Spanish. Inter-rater agreements between the three judges who assessed the citations measured with kappa are above 0.81. Amplification bias is observed for 11 % of the citations.DiscussionThe bias of amplification obtained in this study is low and confirms the results of a recent study. It is true that the field of cognitive behavioral therapy of psychotic symptoms is free of commercial conflicts of interest. However, it is not protected through allegiance to the therapeutic model. The peer review seems to have a protective effect on the bias of citation in the studied area.
