Accompagner une personne en fin de vie: un témoignage d’humanité?

RésuméDans le cadre des soins palliatifs, l’accompagnement de la fin de vie, de la part des professionnels comme de celui des bénévoles, s’est progressivement structuré et imposé jusqu’à construire une nouvelle scène du mourir. Dans le cadre de la sécularisation, l’accompagnement de la fin de vie modifie notre approche de la mort, l’accompagnant devenant un médiateur. Mais cette médiation n’est plus religieuse comme l’assumait avant-hier le prêtre, ni même uniquement médicale, au sens psychophysiologique du terme. Entre le discours salutaire d’hier et le discours sanitaire d’aujourd’hui, entre salut et santé, l’accompagnant atteste d’une humanité blessée mais maintenue. Il est témoin d’humanité de et pour un autrui fragilisé dans la mort longue. L’accompagnement de la fin de vie invente ainsi, avec la médiation de l’accompagnement, un espace-temps transitionnel qui atteste de l’humanité de celui qui se meurt jusque dans son désarroi, résistance ultime à une approche fonctionnelle exigeant du « mourant » qu’il fasse bonne figure.
