In hospital, nighttime inaugurates a realm of imagination for the patient, and a world of worrisome surveillance for the healthcare professional. This exceptional moment can enhance the patient-caregiver relationship, or on the contrary, and at the same time, be a source of stress. The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the challenge of care delivery, and reception, in the nighttime environment in hospital. The goal is to show how the lower activity level in hospitals at night can change “giving care” into “taking care”.
