Mirror-image pain is mediated by nerve growth factor produced from tumor necrosis factor alpha-activated satellite glia after peripheral nerve injury

After peripheral nerve injury, tumor necrosis factor α-activated satellite glia in the contralateral dorsal root ganglion produce excess nerve growth factor that, in turn, enhances nociceptor excitability and results in mirror-image pain.
