Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common and severe disorder with significant consequences for sufferers. The development of innovative and effective treatment options for this disorder is, therefore, essential. The evolving conceptualization of the disorder has highlighted the presence of cognitive deficits, prompting clinicians and researchers to turn toward cognitive approaches to intervention. Examples of new approaches include cognitive remediation, a treatment designed to stimulate cognitive functioning through specific exercises, and metacognitive remediation, a treatment designed to develop individuals' capacity to reflect on their own cognitive processes. The objective of the current article is to present these two interventions and discuss their application with ADHD populations. The use of these treatments for individuals with ADHD is in its infancy; although several benefits to these treatments have been observed, the optimal conditions for their use remain unclear. The combined use of these two approaches and the development of future perspectives are discussed.
