Étude de validation de la version française du Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ-3) chez les adolescents garçons

The objective of this current study is to provide a French validation of the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire Scale-3 (SATAQ-3, Thompson et al., 2004) in population of boys. This self-report questionnaire assesses media influences. This scale was initially validated and used on a female sample only. However, the body image literature suggests that media conveys a muscular ideal and may contributed to increase body dissatisfaction in men. A sample of 248 boys (16.8 ± 1.2) completed two questionnaires: the Body Shape Questionnaire (measuring body dissatisfaction) and the SATAQ-3, which is composed of four subscales: information, pressures, general internalization and athlete internalization. Factorial analysis shows four factors, which are the same as the original version. Hence, the model bringing together general internalization and pressures contributes to explain the most important part of the variance of body dissatisfaction among adolescents. Implications of SATAQ-3 could be interesting, especially in order to screen for risk populations and provide weight-control, muscle-gaining and unhealthy behavior intervention programs.
