Childhood experiences in the development of personality disorders

Personality disorders occur in a social context: individuals with these disorders face more adversities and receive less social support, frequently since childhood. This contribution reviews what factors in general determine the experiences that children have, the ways in which these experiences may have an impact on development and some of the pitfalls in interpreting research in this area, before considering current knowledge on the childhoods of adults with personality disorder.
