Le totem familial : évaluation thérapeutique des caractères dans la famille par des représentations d'animaux

RésuméDans la consultation pédopsychiatrique, le comportement d'appel fait évoquer les caractères de l'enfant et de ses proches. Les animaux archétypiques font partie de l'imaginaire social et sont couramment utilisés en pédopsychiatrie et en thérapie familiale. Le totem familial est un outil projectif qui peut être proposé dans les consultations familiales en pédopsychiatrie. Le patient attribue à chaque membre de la famille une représentation totémique d'un animal qui peut correspondre à son tempérament. Les autres membres de la famille en font autant. L'exploration peut être étendue aux familles d'origine, camarades, enseignants, thérapeutes. Les animaux sont disposés sur un support adapté au dispositif familial. Les identifications internalisées par chacun peuvent être interprétées par le thérapeute, qui peut aussi relever les interactions qu'il observe. Une casuistique personnelle de 500 totems familiaux permet de vérifier des représentations types selon les tempéraments sous-jacents à la psychopathologie du patient, et à la forme de parentalité et de fratrie. Des photos de totems familiaux permettent d'en apprécier la moisson riche et facile en représentations, par un dispositif à la fois neutre et spontané. Within the childpsychiatric consultation, the comportment, which calls for the intervention, notes the characters of the child and his family. Archetypal animals are an important part of the social imagination and are commonly used in child psychiatry, as well as in family therapy. The Family Totem is a projective tool that can be proposed when a family resorts to child psychiatry. The patient can attribute to each member of his family a totemic representation of an animal that may correspond to his temperament. The other family members then do the same. The test can be extended to the families of origin, the schoolmates and friends, the teachers, the therapists. The animals are disposed on a magnetic board. The identification internalized by each of the participants can be interpreted by the therapists, who can also note the interactions that he observes. A personal case history of 500 Family Totems allows us to verify reactions that are typical of the temperaments that underlie the patient's psychopathology, and that of his parents and siblings. Photographs of Family Totems allow us to appreciate the rich and easy harvest of representations, developing in to both neutral and spontaneous reactions. Other illustrations show the therapeutic use of Family Totems, through family inclusion, with an interpretive and prescriptive activity. Thus Family Totem is a tool for child psychiatric evaluation and therapy within the family. It helps to recognize the symptomatic behaviour of a child in relation to his temperament and those of his family. Symbolic attributions of animal characters offers representations of child and family reciprocal identifications.
