Images et identités de la personne handicapée dans la société actuelle

RésuméLes avancées récentes dans le domaine du handicap en modifient considérablement l’approche théorique et pratique. Après une période où dominait la notion de « deuil de l’enfant imaginaire », imposé aux parents comme une épreuve obligée, nous sommes à présent dans un contexte où circulent les mots « partenariat, globalité, réseau, projet, continuité des soins, intégration ». On ne dit plus personne handicapée, mais personne en situation de handicap. Cette évolution oblige à reconsidérer la redistribution des rôles respectifs entre spécialistes et non-spécialistes et à repenser les prises en charge, en particulier la relation entre parents et professionnels. C’est dans ce contexte qu’il convient de s’interroger sur le statut de la personne handicapée et sur le sort qui lui est fait, à partir d’une analyse des représentations inconscientes que suscite inévitablement le handicap et qui constitue la source des attitudes persistantes de rejet ou, pire, d’indifférence.

Recent advances in the area of handicap have modified the practical approach to it considerably. After a period in which the notion of “mourning the imaginary child” dominated, one that was imposed on the parents as a necessary ordeal, we are now in a context where the words “partnership, project, continuity of care and integration” are in currency. We no longer speak of a handicapped person but of a person with a handicap. This evolution requires us to reconsider the redistribution of the respective roles between specialists and non-specialists and to think again about the modes of care provided, in particular the relation between parents and professionals. It is in this context that there is a need to reflect on the status of the handicapped person and on the fate that is reserved for him, with reference to an analysis of the unconscious representations that the handicap inevitably arouses which constitute the source of persistent attitudes of rejection or, worse, indifference.
