Earlier work has provided evidence that mourning can be an aggravating component of chronic pain. However, mourning, a state of posttraumatic stress, and pain have similar manifestations suggesting the hypothesis that chronic pain could be a complication of mourning. The efficacy of different ways of dealing with chronic pain (catastrophism, coping, acceptation) can be examined in light of the patient's progress in the stages of mourning. The cascade of secondary phases of mourning participates in the vicious circle of chronic pain, which should be addressed with proper explanations for the patient.
