Une perspective en histoire du handicap

RésuméL’histoire du handicap commence seulement à avoir ses lettres de noblesse. Je rappelle ici comment j’ai tenté de contribuer à ce domaine de recherche en passant par Michel Foucault qui nous dégage de toute conception d’objet permanent et offre un concept très fructueux de « système de pensée ». Mais j’ai pensé que l’anthropologie, quand elle se fait historique, pouvait élargir le regard vers le fait social total (Marcel Mauss). Ceci est d’autant possible que l’histoire et l’anthropologie se sont beaucoup rapprochées et fréquentées, dans les dernières décennies, à partir des questions que le structuralisme de Lévi-Strauss introduisait. Je donne un exemple de ma manière de faire de l’histoire du handicap à travers le système de la réadaptation. Un nouveau système s’annonce qu’il faut mettre en relation avec une école d’historiens qui se veulent scientifiques et militants en même temps et qui nous force à nous situer à nouveau.

The history of disability is only now being recognised as having significant role. I indicate here how I have tried to contribute to this area of research, through the work of Michel Foucault, which releases us from all conceptions of permanent object and offers a very effective concept of “systems of thought”. However, I think that anthropology, when taken historically, can broaden our outlook towards the total social fact (Marcel Mauss). This is all the more possible as history and anthropology have drawn closer together and become more popular over the past few decades, thanks to the issues raised by the structuralism of Lévi-Strauss. I give an example of my way of retracing the history of disability through the system of rehabilitation. A new system is developing which must be seen in the context of a school of historians seeking to be both scientists and activists, and which forces us to define our role anew.
