Overexpression of gankyrin in mouse hepatocytes induces hemangioma by suppressing factor inhibiting hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (FIH-1) and activating hypoxia-inducible factor-1

► Overexpression of gankyrin in hepatocytes induces hemangiosarcomas in transgenic mice. ► The oncoprotein gankyrin binds to factor inhibiting hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (FIH-1). ► Gankyrin increases activity of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1 by sequestering FIH-1. ► Binding of gankyrin to FIH-1 is dependent on the O2 concentration.
