Using satellite data to extract volume-area-elevation relationships for Urmia Lake, Iran

► The volume-area-elevation (V-A-L) characteristics of Urmia Lake were extracted. ► Remote sensing data and analytical models were used. ► A power model and a truncated pyramid model were parameterized for Urmia Lake. ► Long-term variations of the lake area and volume were examined.
