► We use a mail survey to understand why people become aware of and join environmental organizations. ► Owning waterfront property and tenure length predict awareness of and membership in organizations. ► Over time and with age we should expect increased group activity and advocacy. ► We can better understand group mobilization in areas with slow growth and weak mandates.
