Viscous flow during salt welding

► We model the formation of salt welds using the Navier-Stokes equations. ► Salt evacuation is enhanced by increased driving forces and decreased viscosity. ► Increasing boundary drag inhibits complete salt evacuation. ► Wall rock translation can inhibit or enhance weld formation. ► Multi-layered evaporites may be compositionally modified during evacuation.
