Fault inversion vs. new thrust generation: A case study in the Malargüe fold-and-thrust belt, Andes of Argentina

► We analyze normal fault inversion in a case study in the Andes of Argentina. ► We model the conditions for inversion using the ReActiva software. ► General conditions and three particular cases are analyzed. ► Inversion will take place if fault planes have low coefficients of friction. ► Fluid overpressure or frictional-viscous behavior may also cause inversion.
