Echinoderms from Azores islands: An unexpected source of antibiotic resistant Enterococcus spp. and Escherichia coli isolates

► The antibiotic resistance profile of enterococci and E. coli from Azores was examined. ► High percentages of antibiotic resistance were found in enterococci isolates. ► Seven enterococci isolates showed a multiresistant phenotype. ► Streptomycin resistance was observed in five E. coli isolates. ► Bacterial antibiotic resistance represent a potential risk factor in marine ecosystems.
