► We evaluated the mercury concentration in feathers of Magellanic penguins. ► Feathers are popular in monitoring mercury because its non-invasive. ► Hg excretion through the quill is a detoxification mechanism for birds. ► The Hg levels we found are below the levels in quills associated with negative effects.
