The use of kelp sieve tube sap metal composition to characterize urban runoff in southern California coastal waters

► A biomonitoring technique is introduced using metal concentration in kelp STS. ► STS metals had highest concentrations in populations from the Port of Los Angeles. ► Spatial gradients in STS metals were seen with distance from point sources. ► Study demonstrates kelp STS is useful in describing metal pollution within rocky reefs.
