The contribution of benthic macrofauna to the nutrient filter in coastal lagoons

► We examined the role of lagoonal benthic macrofauna in the nutrient filter. ► Macrofauna was grouped into different ecological categories. ► Results differentiated between areas of net exportation and retention. ► Benthic macrofauna clearly favoured the plant-mediated nutrient filter.
