Thermal coupling may control mechanical stability of geothermal reservoirs during cold water injection

► We investigate the effects of cold water injection in a fracture zone-intact rock system. ► Coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical and hydro-mechanical simulations are performed. ► THM coupling describes processes that can play a key role in the triggering of induced seismicity. ► The greatest thermal effects occur in the rock mass surrounding the fracture zone.
