A simple agroclimatic index to delineate suitable growing areas for rainfed maize production in the Free State Province of South Africa

► We investigated the use of an index for delineating maize planting areas. ► The methodology incorporated three main climatic hazard (frost, onset of rain, drought). ► There is strong correlation between the yield and suitability index.
