Growth and structure of CrN nanoislands on Cu(001) studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy

► We develop a method for the fabrication of CrN nanoislands on Cu(001). ► Growth of two types of CrN nanoislands is shown by scanning tunneling microscopy. ► Chromium nitride phase transition is shown by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy.
