The management of chronic pain in the cancer patient implies a psychological component, and more exactly a psychosomatic problematic. Based on experience with our cancer patients, we have examined the different phases marking their disease history, the painful experiences involved and the memory of which can be reactivated when the patient suffers a new painful episode. Examining the medical and psychoanalytical aspects reveals a space where pain and suffering find their place in the therapeutic strategies applied.
