► Layer-by-layer-assembled capsules of CaCO3∣polysaccharides are employed. ► Ca2 + from decomposed CaCO3 interacts with alginate anions and forms scaffolds. ► Scaffold and adhesion of polysaccharides lead to disk-like microstructures.
