Surface modification by laser etching using a surface-adsorbed layer

► Laser etching of a surface-absorbed layer on fused silica samples was performed. ► A thin modified surface layer was found at the etched surfaces. ► Carbon was incorporated into the modified surface. ► Drastically altered optical properties at the etched surfaces were observed.
