Characterization of the βγ-crystallin domains of βγ-CAT, a non-lens βγ-crystallin and trefoil factor complex, from the skin of the toad Bombina maxima

► βγ-CAT is a frog complex of βγ-crystallin and trefoil factor. ► We characterized the biochemical properties of βγ-CAT. ► The βγ-crystallin domains of the protein bind the trefoil factor. ► The βγ-crystallin domains of the protein are able to bind calcium. ► βγ-CAT-induced hemolysis was calcium-dependent.
