Gas emission from the Qingzhu River after the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, Southwest China

► Flammable gas emission after earthquake caused serious concern for local people. ► We identified the gas as of biogenic origin based on chemical and isotopic compositions. ► There are no direct pathways for gas emission from deep natural gas reservoirs. ► There is no expected correlation between the surface gas release and future shocks.
