► The neurotrophic properties of transplanted neural stem cells are limited in time. ► Transplanted NPCs survival depends on region-specific host brain support. ► Striatal lesion induces a reactive, β1-integrin dependent supportive environment. ► Long term cultured NPC spheres exhibit reduced neurotrophic properties.
