Presenilin mouse and zebrafish models for dementia: Focus on neurogenesis

▶ Autosomal dominant mutations in the presenilin gene cause familial Alzheimer's disease. ▶ Presenilins play an important role in neural progenitor cell maintenance and neurogenesis. ▶ Presenilin knockout and Alzheimer mouse models provide valuable information on the role of presenilin during nervous system development and in neurodegenerative disease. ▶ Zebrafish are emerging as an attractive vertebrate model organism to study presenilin and to identify novel therapeutic targets for Alzheimer's disease.
