Spatial distribution and temporal trends of persistent organochlorine pollutants in sediments from Lake Maryut, Alexandria, Egypt

► High levels of POPs were found near sewage discharge and industrial areas. ► Ubiquitous contaminants were PCBs, DDTs, CHLs, and CBs. ► POPs levels were moderate to high compared to other urbanized regions worldwide. ► Areas of expected ecological risk were identified. ► Temporal trends in POP levels were influenced by input pathways at two sites.
