Evaluation of the possibility for phytoplankton monitoring frequency reduction in the coastal waters of the Community of Valencia, in the scope of the Water Framework Directive

► The frequency of an environmental monitoring campaign was analyzed. ► A new monitoring policy aimed at reducing financial and human costs was designed. ► A lower sampling frequency is proposed for certain water bodies. ► WFD requirements regarding the application of new monitoring policy results remains unchanged.
