Status of marine pollution research in South Africa (1960-present)

► Available scientific literature between 1960 and 2012 was assessed. ► There was a marked decline in pollution monitoring research results from 1990 to present. ► Decline was attributed to the lack of a national marine pollution monitoring programme. ► General trend was that levels of metals and organics are relatively low when compared to other regions of the world.
