Antifouling strategies: History and regulation, ecological impacts and mitigation

► Elimination of toxic biocides from antifouling (AF) paints is unlikely in the near future. ► We currently lack an effective AF replacement. ► The costs of eliminating toxic biocides may outweigh the impacts of current AF strategies. ► We recommend gradual introduction of restrictions to allow development of non-toxic strategies.
