Modification of activated sludge properties caused by application of continuous and intermittent current

► This study has demonstrated the successful polishing of sludge characteristics through elektrokinetics. ► To achieve better sludge characteristics, the electrical operating parameters should be optimized based on MLSS concentration. ► Intermittent exposure at low current density and voltage gradient was found a promising operating conditions. ► This study has illustrated the relationship between elektrokinetics and sludge characteristics. ► This study opened the door for promising applications of elektrokinetics in wastewater treatment.
