► Interpolation of data points is a main source of prediction errors during mapping. ► Compared different interpolation approaches and techniques for predicting θv. ► Approach 1 underestimated θv. ► Approach 2 overestimated θv, but reduced prediction bias and improved accuracy. ► This study suggests an alternative approach of mapping secondary variables.
