Thyroid diseases count among the widespread diseases. Chronic iodine deficiency is believed to be the major cause of this organ's malfunctioning. A great number of organs aside from the thyroid gland require iodine as an essential trace element. Diagnostics include analysis of blood and urine as well as imaging methods. In order to provide struma prophylaxis, daily intake of iodine should amount to 200 µg. Sea fish, algae, and iodisised table salt are major sources of iodine. In case of Hashimoto-thyreoiditis, antibody formation may be reduced by selenum substitution. Currently, there is no evidence of effectiveness of gluten-free nutrition. Chinese medicine is aware of various syndromes associated with thyroid diseases. TCM dietetics is based primarily on the effect of temperature and the flavours of foodstuffs. Aliments, which are appropriate and specific to a syndrome, make a mild therapeutic agent supporting required medication.
