Conclusion. - This study provide an overview of quantity, indications, technical implementations and interpretation of ATF in French general hospitals belonging to the ColBVH study group in 2002. Variability of practices was evidenced and a lack of competence was observed. In 2002, faced with increased demands from physicians, microbiologists expressed a strong deire for consensual policies, as well as for easy to perform and clinically relevant ATF methods. Since then, technical progresses has been made and some guidelines have become available, but ATF remains an area of intense interest for both biologists and physicians in the ColBVH study group hospitals.
