Effect of vineyard-scale climate variability on Pinot noir phenolic composition

► We measured vineyard light and temperature, and winegrape color and astringency. ► We developed models to relate fruit composition and environmental conditions. ► A cool previous fall and early summer promote desirable fruit characteristics. ► Warm springs tend to increase tannins (responsible for astringency). ► High levels of light decreased desirable compounds; growers could shade fruit more.
