The carbonization of thin polyaniline films

► Thin polyaniline hydrochloride films have been carbonized in an inert N2 atmosphere. ► Conversion to N-containing carbon analogs at 500 °C was proved by Raman spectroscopy. ► Crosslinked phenazine-like and oxidized quinonoid units were detected after heating. ► Aniline oligomers deposited on silicon support were preserved during heating. ► Hydrophilicity of films increased after heating.
