⺠Trypanosomes posses a unique thiol-redox system centered on trypanothione, a bis-glutathionyl conjugate of spermidine. ⺠Trypanothione system sustains cellular functions that in higher eukaryotes rely on glutathione or thioredoxin systems. ⺠Trypanothione-dependent redox-metabolism is the Achilles' heel of these ancient and deadly parasites.
