The legacy of impact conditions in morphometrics of percussion marks on fluvial bedrock surfaces

► Rig experiments show that percussion marks are the result of solid particle impact. ► Crater diameters scale with kinetic energy (K.E.) available upon impact. ► In flume experiments, K.E. is estimated from measured impact mark diameters. ► Estimates of particle K.E. compare well to calculated values from flume parameters. ► Impact K.E. can be mapped in the field using our empirical equation.
