► We investigated diel changes in a parcel of agricultural drainage water. ► Algal pigments and nutrients did not exhibit diel patterns in the parcel of water. ► Algal pigments increased during daylight hours and remained constant at night. ► Algal growth occurred despite limiting phosphate concentrations.
