Characterization of polychlorinated biphenyls and brominated flame retardants in sediments from riverine and coastal waters of Surabaya, Indonesia

► Riverine sediments have higher concentrations of PCBs and BFRs than coastal waters. ► Proximity to point sources, TOC and hydrodynamic location are factors controlling their levels. ► Land based activities in areas such harbors, urban, commercial and industrial were the major sources. ► PCBs levels in polluted riverine sediments of the present study exceeded the sediment quality guidelines standards.
