► Atherosclerosis and NAFLD are major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. ► Guinea pigs have been suggested to be a more “realistic” model for atherosclerosis. ► Very few studies in guinea pigs report observations of atherosclerotic lesions. ► Guinea pigs may be better models for studies into liver pathology. ► Future work should address variability in experimental conditions to allow comparison.
